Fifteen years before the
famous first iPhone was developed by Apple, IBM invented in 1992, the
first smartphone and
released it for purchase in 1994.
This smartphone was called the Simon Personal
Communicator (SPC). It was the first phone to combine the
functions of a cell phone, i.e. you could make calls, and a PDA, which back
then was a handheld device you could use for emails and send faxes.

and sleek, the device still featured several elements that became staples to
every smartphone that

with GPRS and EDGE support for data transfer.

camera.

With the
introduction of the third-generation (3G) mobile
phone networks in 2001. Before
3G, most mobile phones could send and receive data at a rate sufficient for
telephone calls and text messages. Using 3G, communication takes place at
bit-rates high enough for sending and receiving photographs, video clips, music
files, e-mails, and more. This aided the development of the iPhone which runs on iOS
and T-Mobile G1 which runs on Google’s Android OS.
